Better Living for Seniors Coalition Meeting
Valencia Hills Health & Rehab
1350 Sleepy Hill Rd., Lakeland
Aug. 18, 2010

 The meeting was called to order at 9:05 am

 Guest Speaker
Colleen Burton- Executive Director, Polk Vision
Seven years ago, community leaders joined forces to address critical issues facing the community.  Out of that visioning process, they developed Polk Vision, a comprehensive mechanism for future community development.  The executive summary lists the long-term vision with strategic solutions and community-wide benchmarks.  Over the 5 years, there have been many updates and benchmarks to be documented.  They are currently working on Polk Vision Refresh, which will be based on recent community-wide surveys.  They have expanded into the internet with Facebook and Twitter, but still consider “focus groups” the best option for community feedback.  They see their role as identifying and communicating community priorities in an effective manner. Polk is partnered with 3 other visioning groups in central Florida (links available on the web to other regional groups).  The Federal Government requires community visioning and partnering in many funding proposals.  Consider logging in; becoming a partner; and joining one of the focus groups: quality of life; economic development; etc. Polkvision.com   If you are a vision partner, you will be invited to meetings where: you can get your word out; they provide Leadership training; they write letters of support for partner grants; etc.  There is an upcoming event in Oct. featuring Refresh Polk Vision, which will be an excellent opportunity to network. One current initiative is attracting and retaining “talent” in Polk County.  Ms. Burton is available and happy to speak at other organizations.
